Structural Drying
Drying a building's framing, drywall, and subfloor after water gets in, using air movers, dehumidifiers, and moisture readings until the materials reach a dry standard. The drying log is the evidence that supports equipment counts and drying days on the invoice. Drying stops when the readings hit the target, not when the room looks dry.

- Sketch (Xactimate)
The drawing tool where you lay out the roof and building so the software calculates every measurement it uses. Errors in the sketch flow into every line item that depends on it. Pitch, valleys, and waste belong in the sketch, not in later guesswork.
- Steep slope
A roof steeper than about 6/12. Steep slopes are harder and more dangerous to work, so Xactimate adds a steep charge to labor and materials.
- Subcontractor
A separate crew or company hired for part of the job, such as a gutter or drywall crew. Their work still belongs in the estimate, and their proof of insurance matters before they start. An unpaid sub can file a lien in most states, so get lien waivers as work is done.

A follow-up request to the carrier for items the original estimate missed, code requirements, additional damage, or corrected quantities.
- Supplemental payment
The additional payment a carrier issues after a supplement is approved.
- Test Square
A measured patch of roof, often ten feet by ten feet, where an inspector counts hail or wind marks and applies that rate to the slope. Adjusters use it to set how many shingles get replaced, so its location and photos can change the scope. Damage outside the square still counts when documented.
