Insurance claim
A formal request to an insurer for payment after damage to covered property.
On a real claim
An insurance claim is the formal request to an insurer for payment after damage to covered property, opened by the policyholder and then worked by an adjuster. On a claim the contractor is not the insured, so the coverage decisions and the payment belong to the homeowner. What goes wrong: a contractor negotiates coverage directly with the carrier, or starts work before the claim is approved, and creates problems. Check who is authorized to speak for the policy and get approval before you begin.
