- Pipe collar
The flashing piece that seals a roof where a plumbing vent pipe passes through it, also called a pipe boot. Collars crack with sun exposure, and a failed collar is a leading source of small roof leaks, so it appears as its own line item on a repair scope.
- Plywood
The wood sheathing panels nailed to roof framing, sold in thicknesses like 7/16 or 15/32 inch and rated for roof decking. Decks are replaced when they are delaminated, rotted, or too thin for the new covering, and the replacement is priced by the sheet.
- Power vent
A roof-mounted exhaust fan that pulls attic air out mechanically instead of relying on passive vents. On a claim it is a separate line item from the shingle tear-off, and carriers often question whether it was damaged or just old, so photograph it before removal.
- Rake
The sloping outer edge of a gable roof from the ridge down to the eaves. Drip edge is required along rakes as well as eaves, per IRC R905.2.8.5.
- Rake edge
The sloped edge of a roof where the gable meets the shingles, running from eave to ridge. It takes its own trim, starter, and fasteners, so measure rake length separately from eave length or the material order and the estimate will both come up short.
- Re-roof
Installing a new roof covering over an existing one, or tearing the old covering off first, without changing the roof structure. It matters in a claim because the scope and price differ sharply between an overlay and a full tear-off, so confirm which one the carrier approved.
