Material waste factor

The extra allowance added to a material quantity to cover the material lost to cuts, waste, and breakage during installation. Roofers order a little more than the measured area because shingles and flashing waste at valleys, hips, and edges. The waste factor in the estimate prevents a shortage of material on the job, and the adjuster sees it as part of the quantity calculation for the measured area.
