Granule loss

Loss of the tiny mineral granules that coat asphalt shingles. Granules protect the shingle from sunlight and rain, and they are worn off over time by weathering, hail, and foot traffic. Heavy granule loss shortens the shingle's useful life and can be used as evidence that a roof needs replacement. An estimator checks for granule loss when deciding whether a roof is repaired or fully replaced in a claim.
