Functional damage

Damage that affects the way a component performs, even if it does not look severe. For example, a shingle that is creased or cracked may look intact from the ground but can still let water through. Insurance carriers use the difference between cosmetic and functional damage to decide coverage, so estimators describe what the damaged element does and how it fails, not only how it appears.
