A traditional roofing underlayment made from asphalt-saturated paper, installed on the roof deck beneath the shingles. It adds a secondary water barrier and protects the deck before and during installation. Roofers may use one or more layers of felt depending on the roof pitch and local practice, and the quantity is measured as part of the roof system. Synthetic underlayment is now common, but felt paper still appears on many estimates.
